RFID as an acronym for Radio Frequency Identification, it is used to describe a system that transmits the identity (in the form of a unique serial number) of an object or person wirelessly, using radio waves. It's grouped under the broad category of automatic identification technologies. It is also the use of a wireless non-contact radio system to transfer data from a tag attached to an object, for the purposes of automatic identification and tracking.

The RFID device serves the same purpose as a bar code or a magnetic strip on the back of a credit card or ATM card; it provides a unique identifier for that object. And, just as a bar code or magnetic strip must be scanned to get the information, the RFID device must be scanned to retrieve the identifying information.

RFID tags or cards are sometimes called proximity tags or proximity cards. This is because as the cards must simply be waived or tapped in front of a reader rather than swiped.

An RFID tag can be affixed to an object and used to track and manage inventory, assets, people, etc. For example, it can be affixed to cars, computer equipment, books, mobile phones, etc.

A basic RFID system consists of three components:
  • An antenna or coil
  • A transceiver (with decoder)
  • A transponder (RF tag) electronically programmed with unique information
